Spessartine on feldspar
description: LOCALITY: Near Skardu, Northern Areas, Pakistan 1 3/4" across Ex Irv Brown collection This piece was bought from Irv Brown during a visit to his home in San Diego, California shortly before the Tucson Show in 1999. This piece is desirable because: (a) The spessartine crystals are perfect and all of their faces are as lustrous as polished glass. (b) The spessartine crystals are all are intensely colored. They glow bright red in daylight. (c) The spessartine crystals are symmetrical. (d) The spessartine crystals are exposed enough from the matrix to allow ready appreciation of their three dimensional geometry. (e) The contrasts in colors and textures of the spessartine crystals and matrix is stark and esthetic. (f) The spessartine to matrix ratio is pleasing since the partial orthoclase crystal is in a pleasing proportion to the crystals of spessartine. The matrix is not too big or too small in relation to the gem crystals that it presents. (g) The spessartine crystals are separated from each other instead of being "bunched" or in a tightly knit druse. This allows easier appreciation of the geometry, perfection and beauty of the spessartine crystals.
