Elbaite (tourmaline) crystal
description:
LOCALITY: Himalaya Mine, Mesa Grande, San Diego Country, California, United States

4" tall

This fine bi-colored (pink and green), lustrous, double terminated crystal is from one of America's classic mineral localities. The Himalaya Mine near Mesa Grande, San Diego County in California was mined for tourmaline for longer than any other American locality.

I find this piece esthetically pleasing since the colors are as or near as strong as could be expected for this locality. The definition between the pink and green phase boundaries is also sharp. This is desirable. The luster of the crystal is higher than average.

It is bigger and better than most elbaite singles from the Himalaya Mine that one can find around the United States.

This piece was traded from Dylan Stolowitz during a visit to his gallery in upstate New York in March 2012.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
