Fluorite on sphalerite
description:
LOCALITY: Elmwood Mine, near Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, United States

6" across

This piece was also mined in the 1980's. The fluorite crystals are pristine aside from eye visible damage on the top left-hand corner of the largest crystal. This damage has minimal impact on display when the piece is vertically mounted with the somewhat damaged corner of the fluorite crystal pointing downwards.

A desirable trait possessed by this generally high quality piece is the contrast between the reflective black crystallized sphalerite matrix and the transparent, mauve-purple, lustrous cubic crystal of fluorite.

I bought this piece from Ted Scholz of Stone Hut, South Australia (state) in mid 2013.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
