Amethyst & calcite, Brandberg, Namibia
description: 5" across Many traits distinguish this fine specimen of fine amethyst from Brandberg, Namibia. These are as follows: (a) The amethyst crystals are pristine. There is absolutely no damage on their edges or vertices and all of their faces are as lustrous as polished glass. (b) Matrix specimens of amethyst from Brandberg are much less common than loose crystals from this locality. (c) Interest is added by the frosted crystals of rhombohedral calcite that are over the matrix. (d) Quartz crystals from most localities generally display striations on their side faces. A characteristic of many Brandberg quartz specimens is a complete absence of these striations. This piece displays this unusual and desirable trait. All of the above contribute to this Branberg amethyst being one of the finer ones produced. Demand for fine Brandberg specimens will always exceed supply since pieces from this remote locality are removed by artisan miners only equipped with simple hand tools.
