Fluorite and galena on quartz
description: 5 1/2" across LOCALITY: Rogerley Mine, Weardale District, County Durham, England. This piece has the appearance of the two other species growing on quartz stalactites. When I first saw this piece, I wondered whether the quartz "stalactite" (or a "stalagmite" since it is presented as shooting upwards?) is in fact really a quartz crystal that is encrusted by a later deposited generation of smaller drusy quartz crystals. It is the only piece from this locality of this type that I have encountered over the years. When viewed in daylight through a glass window pane, it appears to lack daytime fluorescence.
