Atacamite
description:
LOCALITY: New Cornwall Mine, Kadina, South Australia (state)

1 7/16" long

Atacamite is a rare mineral species that is found at few copper mines around the world. The largest crystals of the species were mined at Moonta-Wallaroo-Kadina before the turn of the last century. This is the largest atacamite crystal that I have ever owned. Although a small number of even larger crystals were preserved, this crystal is an impressive one in terms of size.

I bought this piece from David Cowen of Adelaide, South Australia (state) during a visit to his home in mid 2014. David bought it from the collection of the late Harvey and Joan Henley. They bought it from Albert Chapman.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
