Open cut at Burra Burra
description:
Burra Burra is one of Australia's old mineral localities. The South Australian Mining Associated started mining operations there on 29th September 1845. In the early history of mining at Burra, all mining was underground. Open cut operations began in 1870 but were forced to cease in 1877 by low copper prices and higher expenses in exploiting lower grade copper ore. The mine then remained abandoned for almost a century until open cut operations were recommenced in 1971. Mining at Burra Burra ceased in 1981 when ore could no longer be economically mined.
