CLOSEUP #2
description:
LOCALITY: Milpillas Mine, near Cananea, Sonora Province, Mexico

4 1/2" across

After a visit to the United States in March 2012, I concluded that Milpillas was the world's greatest azurite locality. I also concluded that there was a glut of very fine Milpillas azurite specimens on the American mineral specimen market. Since I love azurite, I decided to return to the United States as soon as possible so I could acquire as many fine Milpillas azurite specimens as I could afford.

I arrived in Arizona in late July 2012 to pursue this once in a life time opportunity. Much of my two month stay in Tucson and Phoenix revolved around acquiring around 30 specimens of Milpillas azurite and three specimens of Milpillas brochantite (a rare copper bearing sulfate which also reaches its ultimate development at Milpillas; also illustrated on this website).

Shortly before my stay in Arizona concluded, the plant at the Milpillas mine was retooled to process sulfide ore instead of the more shallow supergene ore which contained the treasure trove of "linarite blue", lustrous crystals of azurite with their amazing variety of crystal habits and sometimes with malachite or perched on a prized, bright white earthen matrix. When bright blue azurite crystals are arranged over it, the contrasts in colors and textures is stunning and maybe "unbeatable."

I would rate this piece as one of the prettiest of all of the specimens of Milpillas azurite that I have seen. The crystals are neon blue, razor sharp, separated, display the luster of polished glass and are on a contrasting bright white and well proportioned matrix. Specimens like this illustrate why Milpillas now has the status as the world's best locality for azurite. What locality could produce better?

This piece was traded from Evan Jones during a visit to Arizona in late 2012.
