Sphalerite, calcite and quartz
description:
LOCALITY: Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia

Sphalerite was an ore mineral at Broken Hill. Despite this, crystals of sphalerite were rare at this locality. This unusual specimen exhibits lustrous and relatively large crystals of sphalerite with crystalline calcite and transparent, lustrous crystals of quartz. This piece was formerly in the collection of Milton Lavers. His collection was sold to Ian Bruce in 2014. The author traded this piece from Ian on 6th December 2015.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
