Pyromorphite on galena
description:
LOCALITY: Kintore Open Cut, Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia

3" across

Ex Arnold van der Heidan collection. This piece was traded from Arnold in 1989 during a visit to Broken Hill. Arnold was a senior geologist employed by the Minerals Mining and Metallurgy company. It mined Kintore Open Cut.

This pyromorphite specimen "stands out" because:

(a) The morphology of the pyromorphite crystals is unusual for the species. Most Broken Hill pyromorphite crystals of any size tend to be "barrel shaped" instead of elongated along the c-axis.

(b) Although the piece is not pristine, its condition is remarkable considering the size of the piece, the fragility of the species and the fact it was removed from an operating mine.

(c) The star shaped arrangement of the pyromorphite crystals is esthetically pleasing.

(d) It is of interest that the pyromorphite crystals are on a matrix of primary galena. This shows that this specimen was collected at the water table which divides the primary ore from the supergene zone at Broken Hill.
