Scolecite, Nasik, India.
description: 7" ac I bought this piece from Robert Lavinsky in September 2010. During my early career as a collector, I saw hundreds of lesser quality specimens of scolecite which were imported into Melbourne for resale to the decorator rock market. Unlike the thousands of lesser scolecite specimens in the world, this one is free from the flaws of missing crystals, smashed off terminations, lack of luster or it just "not being the full hemisphere." Since a hemisphere of this size and quality is collected by artisan miners from hard basalt with only hand tools, specimens of this size and quality will never be common since any scolecite that is encountered during quarry excavation is likely to suffer at least some destruction when mined as described.
