Sphalerite on quartz, Dal'negorsk, Russia
description: T 5" tall. Ex Ed David collection. This piece is in fact from the Nicolai Mine which was a significant producer of Dal'negorsk specimens during the 1990's. The specimen consist of sphalerite crystals and crystal twins on an attractive quartz encrusted rock matrix. The sphalerite is glossy and black. This is certainly one of the world's finest specimens of black sphalerite. It has an interesting history: (1) At an unknown time before February 2009, it was owned by Stuart Wilensky. (2) Stuart Wilensky sold it to Keith Proctor. (3) Keith Proctor resold it to Ed David - the former science adviser of the late Richard Nixon (former president of the United States). The price paid was $25,000. (4) Robert Lavinsky bought the Ed David collection.
