Brochantite, Milpillas Mine, Sonora, Mexico
description: 5" across This relatively large example of this mineral which is rare as fine display specimens consist of lustrous, deep green crystals of brochantite on matrix. The crystals are translucent to transparent and glow when back lit. This is an upper level example of the species. I have seen much longer (over 3") crystals without matrix. I have also seen longer crystals protruding from a rock matrix but some of these pieces seemed too fragile to transport within the United States let alone from the US all the way to Melbourne. I always consider durability when I buy mineral specimens as beauty is immaterial if it cannot be preserved despite the best efforts.
