Cobaltocalcite with Kolwezite
description:
LOCALITY: Unknown Mine, near Kolwezi, Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo

2 1/2" across

Kolwezite (the murky green mineral on the periphery of this piece) is a rare carbonate of cobalt and copper. Unlike most Congo cobaltocalcite, this piece does not merely consist of a sugary pink coating on a rock. It displays sharp but intergrown crystals.

I visited Katanga province in late 2009 and worked there for a total of three weeks while trawling for high quality mineral specimens. They were rare compared with the high volume of wholesale fill that is so easy to buy in the Katanga but so difficult and expensive to ship out of Katanga. I bought this piece from a primary source supplier in late 2009.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
