Carrolite on calcite
description:
LOCALITY: Kamoya Sth Mine, near Kambove, Katanga province, Democratic Republic of the Congo

3 1/8" tall

This is an attractive and relatively rare combination specimen that consists of small, sharp and lustrous carrolite crystals on a rock matrix with a bright white crystals of rhombohedral calcite. Matrix carrolite specimens in any size are a rarity because normally this fragile mineral became detached from the pocket wall during excavation by artisan miners who were only equipped with hand tools.

I bought this piece during a visit to Katanga province in late 2009.
