This is in fact a calcite crystal twin. Two or more crystals that share a common atomic plane are referred to as twinned. A twinning line can be seen in the middle of this twin. The two calcite crystals that comprise this twin are referred to as being scalenohedral in crystal habit. The largest faces of the calcite crystals resemble scalene triangles in shape. All calcite crystals from Elmwood are of this habit. and it is not unique to Elmwood. Other localities that produce crystals that are very similar in shape include Matthew Webb Photo
