Ilvaite with quartz
description:
LOCALITY: Huang Gang Mine, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China

4 1/2" across

Ex Professor Stephen Smale collection

I find this world class specimen of ilvaite with quartz to be extremely photogenic. The piece consist of well defined, terminated crystals of ilvaite on a little rock matrix. An important trait of this piece is the cluster of greenish, double terminated, needle-thin quartz crystals attached to two of the larger ilvaite crystals. I believe the quartz crystals are hedenbergite included.

This piece was traded from the collection of Professor Stephen Smale during a visit to Hong Kong in November 2013.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
