Arsenopyrite with fluorite
description:
LOCALITY: Yaoganxian Mine, Hunan Province, China

3 1/2" across

It is a bold, lustrous, reflective specimen with lots of "action" on the surface of the specimen to add even more interest to it. The edges and vertices are all pristine on what is in fact a group of many smaller arsenopyrite crystals that have "brick walled" to build this large and impressive piece.

I have not seen a larger crystal of arsenopyrite from any locality and this would surely rank as among the best of species. Arsenopyrite consist of arsenic, iron sulfide and large deposits of this species are sometimes mined for gold.

Minor fluorite is also present on the underside of this piece.

This piece was traded from Robert Lavinsky in 2010.

Matthew Webb collection and photo
