Siderite and chalcopyrite
description:
LOCALITY: Bijie, Guizhou, China

4" across

Bijie only produced a small number of mineral specimens. Very few high quality siderite specimens were preserved. This is one of the finer specimens of siderite that this locality produced.

The piece consist of siderite crystals with faces that are as lustrous as polished glass. The siderite crystals are translucent and brown with a greenish hue. The siderite is with small but sharp and lustrous crystals of chalcopyrite.

Importantly, this piece is in remarkably good condition all over. It would be challenging to collect siderite in pristine condition from an operating mine since it is a soft mineral which exhibits perfect cleavage along three planes.

This fine piece was traded from the collection of Professor Stephen Smale during a visit to Hong Kong in November 2013.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
