Cobaltocalcite, Katanga; 2 1/2" across

Some of the world's greatest specimens of cobaltocalcite occurred at the mines around Kolwezi. This is a fine exmple,  The dark green species on this piece is kolwezite. Cobaltocalcite owes its color to cobalt.  Cobalt is a tranitional metal.  Transitional metals often form salts that are colored.
