Dioptase with plancheite
description:
LOCALITY: "Pimbi", Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo

6" Across

This superb plancheite was formerly in the collections of the late John Barlow and Dr Ed David. I bought it from Robert Lavinsky at the Tucson Show of 2006 shortly after he bought the Ed David collection. The matrix has been reinforced and Cal Graeber effected this work. This Congo dioptase specimen is particularly desirable because the dioptase crystals are separated from one and other so their geometry can be more easily appreciated. The dioptase crystals are glassy lustered, undamaged, gemmy and vividly coloured. The color and texture contrast between the dioptase crystals and the plancheite coated matrix is also pleasing. Some of the dioptase crystals are also doubly terminated.

This piece is far better than any of the Congo dioptase specimens that have been produced post 2001. It may be the finest quality and most esthetic specimen of Katanga dioptase in existence.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
