description: LOCALITY: Elmwood Mine, near Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, USA The calcite crystal twin is 5" tall (without matrix). Ex Keith Proctor and Dr Steve Neely collections. I obtained this piece in a trade with Keith Proctor in early 2006. In this trade, Robert Sielecki acted as my agent since I was unable to attend the 2006 Tucson Show in person as a result of business commitments. This piece is dominated by a lustrous, symmetrical, pale-orange, mainly transparent calcite crystal twin. It is on a well proportioned chert matrix. A twinning line is visible in the middle of the calcite twin. A shallow surface abrasion near this line may be felt or seen albeit with more difficulty. Elmwood began to produce some of the finest calcite specimens in North America during the 1980's. At this time, crystals too heavy for a man to carry were found during mining. To date, Elmwood is a locality that has withstood the test of time. It is still considered to be America''s premier calcite locality.
