Fluorite on quartz
description: LOCALITY: Huang Gang Mine, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China 5 1/4" tall Ex Professor Stephen Smale collection This piece was traded from Steve Smale during a visit to Hong Kong in November 2013. I first saw this piece during a visit to Steve's apartment in October 2010. He had recently bought the piece from one of his many suppliers of Chinese mineral specimens who would bring mineral specimens from mainland China to Hong Kong. In late 2010, it was not common knowledge in the collector community that Huang Gang, Inner Mongolia was a source of mineral specimens. The party who supplied this piece to Dr Smale in 2010 told him that it was from a new locality near the border of China and Pakistan. Since this piece may have changed hands more than three times in the supply chain from Inner Mongolia to the Smale collection, it is unknown whether or not the unidentified "wholesale" supplier was also misinformed about the locality by his supplier. The piece itself consist of two dominant crystals of colorless, opaque and somewhat spindle-shaped crystals of quartz with several strong green, moderately lustrous fluorite hemispheres that are mainly perched on and around the termination of the taller quartz crystal. I have only seen one other fluorite with quartz specimen of this type. The other specimen was inferior to my piece. The lesser piece was illustrated in "The Mineralogical Record".
