Spessartine, nr Skardu, Pakistan
description: 1 3/4" across Ex Irv Brown collection. I acquired this piece from Irv during a visit to his home in San Diego, California in early 1999. It was featured at mineral shows in some of Irv's competitive exhibit cases. This piece is desirable since: (a) The spessartine crystals are perfect and all of their faces are as lustrous as polished glass. (b) The spessartine crystals are all are intensely colored. They glow bright red in daylight. (c) The spessartine crystals are symmetrical. (d) The spessartine crystals are exposed enough from the rock so it is easy to appreciate their morphology. (e) The contrast in terms of color and texture between the etched partial orthoclase crystal and spessartine crystals is stark. The spessartine crystals are bright red and smooth and they contrast against a bright white, rough and duller partial crystal of orthoclase. (f) The crystal to matrix ratio is also pleasing since the partial orthoclase crystal is in a pleasing proportion to the crystals of spessartine. (g) The spessartine crystals are separated from each other instead of being "bunched" or in a tightly knit druse. Hence, it is easier to appreciate the perfection and beauty of the crystals of spessartine. All of the above make this Pakistani small miniature spessartine superior to thousands of other stock pieces that can be readily imported from Pakistan via Facebook or found at mineral shows held all over the world.
