Gypsum

LOCALITY: Bolton, Victoria, Australia

8" across

Literally tons of Bolton gypsum is of such poor quality that it is only suitable for agriculture or to be turned into Plaster of Paris. Unlike most Bolton gypsum, this one is highly esthetic. Although gypsum grows in the salt lakes of northern Victoria and South Australia every summer, not all seasons lead to growth of esthetic pieces. This one must have grown during a good year.

This piece was bought from Leon Schmidt of Nuriootpa, South Australia (state) in mid 2015.
