Hyalite, Queensland, Australia; 3 1/4" Across

Hyalite is a type of opal. It is amorphous silica. Since opal does not have any internal crystalline structure, it is classified as a mineraloid and not a mineral. To be a mineral species, a substance cannot be amorphous. This is an important Australian hyalite specimen.
