Ilvaite on quartz, Huang Gang, China; 7" ac

This is also one of the finest specimens of ilvaite in existence.  Ilvaite is a rare mineral species found in some skarn deposits.  A skarn is a rock type created where magma and its heat cause intrude into limestone, dolostone or marble country rock.  Heat that causes decomposition  of calcium carbonate to carbon dioxide gas and calcium oxide which then reacts with molten silicates to create ilvaite and other calcium bearing silicates.
