Spinel crystal
description: <p style="text-align: justify;">LOCALITY: Kahawatta, Ratnapura district, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka <br /><br />5/8" across <br /><br />Unlike most alluvial gem crystals from Ratnapura, the edges of this spinel crystal are <em>sharp.  </em>This fine crystal is almost complete and is bicolored with distinct blue and purple color zoning.  </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;">This gemmological oddity was traded from Andy Seibel when I visited his home in Tehachapi, California in March 2012.  It is the only crystal like it that I have encountered in all of my years of collecting mineral specimens.  </p> <p style="text-align: justify;"> </p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Photo by Andy Seibel  </p>
