description:
LOCALITY: Sir Dominic Mine, Arkaroola, Flinders Ranges, South Australia (state), Australia

2 1/2" tall

This piece is better than most azurite specimens from Arkaroola since it is larger, sharper, more intensely colored and is free of a detracting ingrained matrix. Specimens from the Sir Dominic Mine flooded the Australian mineral specimen market during the late 1980's and small pieces could be bought at local tail gating shows for under $1. Today, good specimens from this mine are no longer readily available although there are still probably a lot of specimens remaining in the mine. Mine access is difficult and the mine is also in a national park. Field collecting the specimens is also extremely laborious and cleaning them thoroughly is another chore.

I bought this piece from Gerry Pauley of Melbourne in 1994 or 1995.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
