Ilvaite on quartz
description:
LOCALITY: Dal'negorsk, Primorjski Kraj, Russia

5" across

This wonderful piece is surely among the best of species. All of the pristine ilvaite crystals are as lustrous as polished glass. Since the ilvaite crystals are separated from each other, their morphology can be readily appreciated.

The ilvaite crystals are on a well proportioned matrix of beta quartz crystals. Quartz crystals generally show a combination of a hexagonal prism terminated by a hexagonal pyramid. In contrast to other quartz crystals, beta quartz crystals only display pyramidal crystal faces. Small hexagonal dipyramids of quartz are present on this piece.

This piece was formerly in the collection of Robert Sielecki of Melbourne. I traded it from Robert's collection in early 2014.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
