Witherite and fluorite
description:
LOCALITY: Cave in Rock, Hardin County, Illinois, United States

3 1/4" across

This piece consist of a symmetrical "bow tie" of pale-yellow, lustrous witherite with minor faintly purple fluorite. The reverse side of this piece is as attractive as the pictured side.

Witherite was thousands of times less common than fluorite at the southern Illinois fluorite mines. Pieces of this quality are among the best of species and many collectors prefer Illinois witherite to Alston Moor witherite.

This piece was traded from Robert Lavinsky during a visit to his gallery in Dallas, Texas during 2012.

Jeff Scovil photo
