Molybdenite
description:
LOCALITY: Wolfram Camp, Queensland, Australia

2 1/2" Across

This molybdenite miniature is of exceptional quality because the edges and vertices of the molybdenite crystals are not rounded. The specimen has the appearance of an iron rose. It is much much rarer and more valuable than an iron rose. Over the past 20 years, the author has seen fewer than five molybdenite specimens of great quality and thousands of masses, partial crystals or rounded crystals.

Wolfram Camp is a small mine near Mareeba in far northern Queensland. During times when the mine was operated, even poor quality molybdenite specimens with rounded edges were not that common.

This exceptional specimen of molybdenite was bought from Phil Perkins in January 2018.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
