description:
LOCALITY: Uchucchacua Mine, Oyon, Lima Department, Peru

2 3/8" across

Ex Robert Sielecki collection

This piece was bought from Robert Sielecki in early 2013.

The matrix of this specimen is completely covered by deep-red, glassy lustered crystals of rhodochrosite. The larger crystals are translucent and the earlier deposited generation of smaller rhodochrosite crystals are transparent. My criticism of most Peruvian rhodochrosite specimens is that they often display an unacceptable crystal to matrix ratio. This is not so with this specimen.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
