Quartz cast after barite, Colorado; 3 7/8" long

This fine example of a mineral oddity started its life as a barite crystal which was then covered with white drusy quartz crystals. In the later history of this piece, the barite crystal dissolved in circulating ground water. Since the quartz was not water soluble under the same conditions that barite dissolved at, a quartz cast prevailed long after the barite ceased to be part of this piece.
