Siderite, China; 5" across

Siderite is not a rare mineral species. It is iron carbonate and forms a solid solution series with calcite - and rhodochrosite in geological environments where a manganese cation source is present during crystal growth. Good siderite specimens are relatively uncommon relative to discarded or overlooked siderite specimens. I bought this one during a visit to Changsha, Hunan in February 2016.
