Bismuth, Germany
description: 2 3/4" tall. Acquired from Dan Weinrich in late 2012. Native bismuth which displays sharp crystals is a great rarity and specimens of this size come from only one worldwide locality. Larger specimens of crystalline bismuth are also found at Wolfram Camp, Queensland, Australia (see piece illustrated on this website in "Queensland album" or "Australia Album") and in Bolivia. Native metal collectors normally start with gold, silver and copper but good specimens of crystallized native bismuth are much much rarer than fine specimens of crystallized gold - the most sought after of the native metals. Handling this piece is also a somewhat tactile experience. Bismuth is a light metal and the piece looks heavier than it really is. When I first picked it up from its box, I thought it seemed almost as light as tin foil.
