Calcite, 884 Mine, Leiping, China
description: LOCALITY: 884 Mine, Leiping, China 3" tall A fine single crystal. In 2001, I bought a group of about 100 crystals from Robert Lavinsky. I donated or sold most of them and this is one of the three that I kept. In relatively recent history, the availability of fine collector calcite specimens from China and Russia has lifted the bar as to standards of fineness in calcite. Before around 1990, if singles of this quality had been available, they could only have been European and would have commanded very high prices compared to what this find specimen of today would command. This illustrates how the modern calcite collector is spoiled compared to the pre 1990 calcite collector.
