description: LOCALITY: Nasik, India 7" across This piece was bought from Robert Lavinsky in September 2010. During my early career as a collector, I saw hundreds of lesser quality scolecite specimens which had been imported into Melbourne for resale to the interior decorator market. Unlike the thousands of "also ran" scolecite specimens, this fine quality piece is free from the common flaws of missing crystals, smashed off terminations, lack of luster or "just not being quite the full hemisphere." Since this fragile scolecite hemisphere was extracted from a cavity in hard basalt by artisan miners equipped only with simple tools for example, sledge hammers, crow bars and hand picks), it seems incredible that this piece was not destroyed shortly after the basaltic cavity that contained it was encountered during quarrying.
