Apophyllite with stilbite
description:
LOCALITY: Jalgaon, North Maharastra, India

3" across

This fine piece consist of an esthetic, undamaged, glassy lustered "sunburst" of pale-green apophyllite centered on a matrix of bright-white stilbite crystals. Green apophyllite is unique to Poona and Jalgaon. The color is caused by a trace of vanadium which "contaminates" the pure apophyllite crystal lattice. Apophyllite "sunbursts" of this size with all of the terminations pristine are uncommon since apophyllite cleaves readily when the crystals absorb shock during the artisan mining process.

I bought this piece from Robert Lavinsky in mid 2002. He had bought it from K.C. Pandey of Mumbai, India.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
