Barite on malachite
description:
LOCALITY: Shungulowe Mine, Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo

10" tall

Ex Joseph Freilich collection

This piece was bought from Stuart Wilensky in 2003.

Illustrated in "The Magnificant Mineral Collection of Joseph A Freilich" Sotheby's auction catalogue for the auction of the Freilich mineral collection in New York City in early 2001.

This mineral combination is rare as attractive, eye visible specimens and this is probably the best example of its type in existence. I have seen a few combination specimens from this locality. The best was around 10% of the size and was not nearly as striking since the malachite "matrix" was not brightly colored and the barite crystals were not distinct. I have not seen malachite with barite as eye visible specimens from any other worldwide locality. Prospects of future production from Katanga province are poor.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
