Tourmaline & quartz
description:
LOCALITY: Stak Nala, Northern Areas, Pakistan

4 1/4" across

The 14 elbaite crystals that partly comprise this piece are moderately lustrous and very dark-green with bi-colored (pastel purple and pastel green) pyramidal terminations. The elbaite crystals are short. Most of them impale the matrix of colorless quartz. Hence, this piece resembles a birthday cake. Since it displays somewhat unusual esthetics, this specimen is differentiated from the tens of thousands of commercial grade Stak Nala elbaite specimens that one can obtain practically any day of the week.

This distinctive piece was bought from Cal Graeber in 2006. It was sold to Wayne Thompson in early 2014 and is now in a private collection.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
