description:
LOCALITY: Boekinhoutshoek area, Mkobola district, South Africa

4 1/2" across

Ex Uli Bahrmann collection. I bought this piece from Gunther Hoppe and Robert Sielecki at the Tucson Show in 2006.

This is a wonderful specimen of amethyst from an isolated and rare locality for the following reasons:

(a) The color is pleasing. The piece is deep purple in color.

(b) All of the quartz crystals are as lustrous as polished glass.

(c) The piece is free of damage. All of the tips, other vertices and edges of the quartz crystals are in pristine condition.

(d) Most importantly, small drusy amethyst crystals selectively cover the side faces of the large elongated amethyst crystals.

As a result of all of the above, this is a "stand out" specimen of amethyst from a rare locality.

This piece was bought from Robert Sielecki at the Tucson Show in 2006. I traded it out to Professor Stephen Smale in January 2016 during one of my visits to Hong Kong.
