Tourmaline
description:
LOCALITY: Jonas Mine, Minas Gerais, Brazil

2 1/2" tall

This famous locality produced a bonanza of cranberry red tourmaline in the late 1960's. Around 70% of the total production was bought by an American collector. Demand for fine Jonas crystals has always exceeded supply since every reasonably advanced collector wants a fine one.

Although my piece is small compared to many of the more famous Jonas Mine pieces illustrated in the popular mineralogical literature, all of the crystal ends on this fine piece are terminations. Hence, this gemmy and lustrous crystal is a rarity.

Now in the collection of Professor Stephen Smale
