Hematite
description:
LOCALITY: N'Chwanning Mine, Kuruman, Northern Cape Province, South Africa

1 1/2" tall

This piece was mined from The Wessels Mine shortly before the beginning of 2009. This elite hematite small miniature displays rare "triangular crystals" of hematite which are perched on a sparing amount of contrasting reddish brown, crystalline andradite rich matrix. This specimen could be described as a "mineralogical oddity" since the crystal habit of the hematite is uncommon for this common species.

This piece was bought from Dr Ronnie McKenzie of Pretoria, South Africa in 2009. It was then sold to Professor Stephen Smale in late 2013.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
