Topaz on quartz
description:
Northern Areas, Pakistan

7" tall

This topaz specimen is a large and spectacular one for the following reasons:

(a) The topaz crystals of this piece are lustrous, gemmy and display a desirable color and depth of color.

(b) The topaz crystal to rock forming mineral species ratio exhibited by this piece is pleasing since the size of the matrix is in proportion to the two topaz crystals which are the focal point of this piece.

(c) Importantly, both topaz crystals are positioned near the center of the matrix. This contributes to a generally less "random looking" appearance of this piece.

(d) The matrix of this piece consist of crystallized quartz, feldspar and muscovite. All three of these rock forming minerals that form the matrix of this piece are also generally bright and clean looking instead of "rocky", dirty, ugly, dusty or grimy in appearance.

One repair is present on this piece. It is at the join between the matrix and the largest topaz crystal. Repair on matrix topaz specimens is not uncommon since topaz displays perfect basal cleavage.

This piece was traded from Robert Lavinsky in mid 2012 during a visit to his gallery in Dallas, Texas.
