Amazonite with quartz
description: LOCALITY: Pikes Peak batholith, Colorado, USA 4 1/2" across This piece was traded from Stuart Wilensky in 2006. Of the different types of American mineral specimens, amazonite with smokey quartz is among the most widely recognized and popular. Traits that put this piece ahead of thousands of inferior Colorado amazonite with smokey quartz specimens are as follows: (a) It is only repaired in one place. In contrast, several expensive Colorado amazonite with smokey quartz specimens marketed in recent years contained over 20 mineral specimen scholarship destroying repairs and restorations. (b) The quartz crystals of the pictured piece are all as lustrous as polished glass. Colorado smokey quartz that occurs with amazonite is often dull in luster. (c) All of the quartz crystals on the pictured piece are sharp. All of the vertices and edges of the smokey quartz crystals are pristine. Most Colorado amazonite with quartz specimens consist partly of quartz crystals with damage to the edges and vertices of the quartz crystals. (d) The quartz crystals of the pictured amazonite with smokey quartz specimen are gemmy and without ugly internal veils. In contrast, many inferior Colorado amazonite with quartz specimens are afflicted with quartz crystals that are opaque. (e) The composition of the pictured amazonite with quartz specimen is appealing since the trio of quartz crystals starts with the largest crystal at the apex of the piece. The smallest quartz crystal is at the "bottom" of the specimen. The arrangement of the smokey quartz crystals resembles a cascading water fall. (f) The crystals of amazonite are intensely colored. The color is better than average.
