WITHERITE, Hardin County, Illinois
description: This specimen is erroneously identified in the text. It is obviously witherite from Hardin County, Illinois. Witherite is barium carbonate. It reaches its ultimate development in Hardin County. I traded this fine piece from Cal Graeber during a visit to his home in Fallbrook, California in 2003. I traded it out to Robert Lavinsky in late 2004 towards a higher value mineral specimen. As fine as this Illinois witherite is, it was never part of Robert Lavinsky's personal collection. Willemite is a zinc bearing silicate species. It does occur at Tsumeb but never as crystal aggregates that appear as illustrated.
