description:
LOCALITY: Hilton Mine, near Scordale, Cumbria, England

2" Tall

This is an inexpensive representative fluorite specimen from the Hilton Mine. The crystals of this piece are relatively small and the color not very saturated. The mineralization at the Hilton Mine occurs in a MVT deposit and it is probable that a lot of fluorite is still underground at this celebrated mineral specimen locality. Unfortunately, the Hilton Mine cannot be mined for fine quality yellow fluorite specimens because the mine is now surrounded by a military firing range. This situation is unlikely to change in the near to immediate future. This piece was acquired via a trade with Evan Jones in late 2012 during a visit to the United States.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
