Malachite after azurite
description:
LOCALITY: Red Dome Mine, Chillagoe, Queensland, Australia

12" across

This significant malachite pseudomorph after azurite was mined during the late 1980's. The Red Dome Mine was a gold-copper mine with a cap of limonitic gossan. Azurite, malachite and some of the world's best crystallized cuprite specimens were found in this gossan.

In its present condition, this is a significant piece and would qualify as the finest or one of the finest pseudomorphous malachite specimens ever removed from an Australian locality. Despite this being an important piece in its present condition, I intend to improve it by having it trimmed in a laboratory.

This high quality piece was bought from an Australian collector in July 2015.

Photo by Matthew Webb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
